Lee Kuan Yew sued others
Eldest son also sued others
Younger son is being sued by others
The Lee family is famous for defamation lawsuits. Perhaps, they are experts in this field.
The defamation suing game has upgraded to a new and higher level. The ‘others’ in the latest case goes up to ‘elite against elite’ level. Member of powerful Lee family
Is being sued, not the other way.
It is now a game of the rich and powerful. The previous ‘others’ are too weak and not rich. Their only mistake is saying something that in the eyes of the Lee family is considered defamed. And they are so poor that they have to get public donations to get through. Some also face bankruptcies.
The younger son is now the enemy of the party co-founded by his father. He is also accused by one minister of trying to bring down the government and destroy the People’s Action Party. The irony is the government is led by his brother. A broken family goes one step further.
How do you describe the state of the PAP now?
For the minister, his criticism seems to suggest he is in desperation. In Chinese, we use the ‘guo ji tiao qiang’ 狗急跳墙, the desperate dog jumping over the wall. When someone has no other option, he will do things even if it looks stupid and dangerous.
For the two ministers, whether to further their suing case or not, it is a situation of struggling. In Chinese, we call it
‘Ji lei’ 鸡肋. Like chicken ribs - nothing left to eat but wasteful to throw away. It could be an opportunity to destroy the younger son but it may also end up nothing, wasting time.
The above reflects the reality of the PAP. On one hand, it is desperate to get things done, correct and right to prevent any further loss of confidence, trust. On the other hand, it tries to find a balance between whether to impose more POFMA, initiate lawsuits, or investigate, to silence the opposition.
Desperation solves nothing. Wasting time in unproductive activities, wondering what is the best option to hammer enemies will lead the PAP to no way.
Ultimately, it will lose more public confidence and trust.
