Anyone but Tharman.
However, there is only one winner.
How to work out a solution for non-establishment candidates?
For people who don’t like the PAP, anyone but Tharman is a valid statement. If people prefer an independent president, even if they are pro-PAP, they will object to Tharman as a choice.
Again, the same people also do not want to see the repeat of 2011. More than 50% of Singaporeans do not want to see the 2011 replay.
A divided and separated voting pattern preferring own candidates will ensure 2011 happening again. This is the game plan of the PAP. A divided non-establishment votes will disappoint most Singaporeans.
Most people still think Tharman is not independent even if he claimed to have an independent mind. His intelligence and wisdom may be of good use in setting visions, directions, strategies or international image of Singapore.
How can a prime minister material person fit into a ceremonial role of president? It is not clear why Tharman made the decision? A smart person who can only call out respect for all. The irony is the government he is associated with is not respecting all Singaporeans, especially those who oppose their policies, having different views.
We must understand that there is only one winner in 2023. To make ‘anyone but Tharman’ valid, candidates will have to work together and be willing to make sacrifices. Otherwise, voters will have to distinguish who is the likely winner and concentrate all the votes to him.
The repeat of 2011 is real and highly possible. Is this what we want? Will we make the PAP laugh (at us) again?
